Cold sores on the lips

Cold Sores and Remedies

Cold sores look more like blisters when they flare in the form of fluid-filled pockets beneath the skin’s surface. They generally appear around the mouth or on the lips. These can even break open at times and ooze over and the outbreak can last for up 7 to 10 days. Depending upon individuals, sometimes it can not be treated with conventional over the counter medications. Some people use regular pharmaceutical ointments to alleviate/treat cold sores, but ultimately due to the pathogens developing a resistance to it, it no longer works. This condition is very common in North America and can afflict as many as 80% of the population.

Let us examine what causes cold sores to appear in the first place

  • It is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1)
  • Triggered by hormonal fluctuations
  • Fevers
  • Illness or even exposure to the sun

Unfortunately once a person first contracts the virus, a breakout is experienced within just a few days. This initial breakout can be quite severe and the person may experience a fever, sore throat, aches including a headache. Much like the cold virus, however, this virus never leaves the host but remains dormant in the nerve cells.

Transmission of this virus HSV-1 can be caused by

  • Direct exposure to saliva
  • Skin contact with the lesions on an infected person
  • Close personal contact is usually required for transmission of the virus
  • People sharing toothbrushes, drinking glasses, or eating utensils

Remedies

There are some home remedies available and common ones are

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

Lemon Balm, also known as Melissa officinalis by its botanical name, is a flowering perennial plant. This useful plant may help to reduce the healing time of the blister and may even prevent future outbreaks.

Lysine, an essential amino acid may also help the reduction of outbreaks. Some studies have found that lysine may be beneficial for reducing the frequency of outbreaks by 2.4 percent per year.

Stress can be another factor for this virus to come out of dormancy. Thus, it is important to reduce the amount of stress in your life. Regularly exercising can significantly reduce stress and one of the less looked at aspects of reducing stress would be meditation.

Aloe Vera, this is a succulent plant species and is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine for centuries. It has antibacterial, antiviral and analgesic properties. Many have used it on their cold sores with excellent results.

Essential oil blends, such as the following constituents of individual oils greatly reduces the time to get rid of blisters within a short time span, in some cases even hours!

Here is a stepwise procedure to create the blend:

  1. Take a 5 ml vial, but make sure it is clean and free of any contamination.
  2. Add about 10 drops of therapeutic grade of Melaleuca oil, also known as tea tree oil.
  3. Add about 10 drops of therapeutic grade Geranium oil
  4. Add about 14 drops of therapeutic grade Lavender oil
  5. Add about 3 drops of therapeutic grade of Helichrysum Italicum oil (optional)
  6. Fill the remaining vial with Castor oil. Castor oil should be cold pressed and hexane free. This is available in most health food stores

Please make sure you get only the therapeutic grade of oils. There are many different companies selling so-called “therapeutic grade” oils, but the one brand I have used and come to trust will have amazing results. Please join my newsgroup and I can forward you the details of how to order oils from the company I trust.

I have been suffering from cold sores ever since I was a small child. My mom gets them and my siblings too. I have always used the over the counter ointments (blistex, abreva etc.), and I have even tried a prescription ointment that kind of worked, but took a long time to fully heal the cold sore.

Since I get cold sores often I was worried about using these ointments, and wondering what’s in them!?
It got to a point where the ointments weren’t doing anything to heal the sores and Vaseline would give the same result ….. Nothing!

The admin of this site (my husbands uncle) did A TON OF RESEARCH to come up with this combination of oils, but I was very sceptical at first. I figured if the prescription ointment wasn’t working then oils certainly wouldn’t work either. Boy was I wrong!

I started using this oil blend when the sore was already full blown and it healed within 3 days (usually would have taken over a week with any other ointments). The next time I felt a cold sore coming I immediately put on this blend of oils and it cleared up within 3 days.

The oil actually makes the sore feel soothed as soon as you put it on!

My only regret is that I wish I found this years ago!

  • I am extremely interested in a natural cure for cold sores for a extended family member. Please get back in touch.

      Hi Donald,
Yes, my nephew and his wife have used this remedy which is basically a blend of different oils (as described on blog post) and according to them it worked wonders. Give me a call and I will provide you with the details from where to get therapeutic grade oils free from synthetic fillers and additives.

This actually works wonders. Caught the cold sore virus while it was still developing. Turns out that this recipe for mixed ingredients has worked better than any antibiotic ointment prescribed. Really recommend it!
